God, there must be a meaning. Fiercely he was certain that there must be a meaning. Surely, while we live we are not lost. Oh Janos, Janos my brother! Surely we are not lost--while we live.

About This Quote

This is a poem by the Jewish writer Franz Kafka. It describes the struggle of the main character, Josef K., to understand something about his life and why he is alive. Josef has a dream where he and his brother, Janos, discover that God was once a man like them; that we all once walked on this earth together; that we’re all part of a great mystery. Although Josef ultimately wakes up from this dream, he becomes obsessed with it.

He talks to everyone about his dream and tries to figure out what it means. He talks to God himself and decides that God doesn't know but he will find out for himself. The poem ends with Josef having fallen asleep and dreaming about his life again.

Again,  the meaning  of this poem is the search for truth in life  and the  search for meaning .
